Managing Ill, Injured & Absent Employees
One of the most difficult situations for an employer or HR
Manager to manage, is dealing with employees who are temporarily
absent from work due to illness, injury, stress or WorkCover
claims. In this workshop, we will hear practical strategies
and advice from Senior IR Consultant, Joanne Barrett on what an
employer can and can't do to support and manage these employees to
ensure legal compliance and commercial outcomes. We will also hear
from Senior Psychologist Kelly Maniatis to discuss the behavioural
issues associated with stress.
The key topics covered in this workshop are:
- Psychological Injuries and Stress - What are they? How to they
arise?
- WorkCover Claims - processes to follow for HR Managers and
supervisors.
- Evidence of the illness and incapacity - What can the employer
ask for?
- Liaising with Family and Medical professionals - privacy
issues.
- Dismissing Injured and Ill Employees - What are the risks and
options?
- Potential legal claims - What constitutes Discrimination and/or
Adverse Action?
- Return to Work Plans - making them work in practice.
- Employee Assistance Programs and how they can help.
- Supporting your other staff and managers.
This workshop will be targeted at HR Managers and other Senior
Managers who may need to manage and resolve these situations. Help
your business leaders to be better equipped to handle these
difficult situations which are on the rise in Australian
workplaces.

Joanne Barrett, Senior Industrial Relations Consultant
Joanne Barrett LLB Grad Dip (IR) has over 17 years
experience in Industrial Relations and Employment Law. Joanne is
passionate about using the legislative framework to develop a
compliant and productive workplace culture, where staff are
rewarded for being responsible and responsive to business needs.
Her overriding goal is to assist clients to achieve commercial
business outcomes in a legally compliant way.
Kelly Maniatis, Senior Psychologist
Kelly Maniatis is a highly
respected psychologist, trainer and management coach with 10 years
experience in the field. She has worked as a consultant in
Management Coaching and Organisational Development, Organisational
Training and Psychological Assessment, as well as Career coaching.
Kelly has extensive experience consulting and training in both the
private and public sectors.
